Tee Time – Elizabeth and James Giveaway!
June 26 | Searching For…

Why does it seem like when it’s time to get dressed in the morning I never have anything to wear?  I’m constantly searching for t-shirts I don’t actually own.  I shopped a few weeks ago for new summer clothes, but I neglected to get enough t-shirts.  Oh, well.  I’ll have to rectify the situation soon.  It’s interesting how something so simple and necessary isn’t always the easiest thing to find.  I’m obsessed with thin, but not too thin, t-shirts that are soft, a bit loose and have the perfect drape.  Yep, I’m pretty specific so no wonder I have trouble finding what I need.

Just because I have trouble finding the perfect tee doesn’t mean you have to.  Fashion Vice is part of a fantastic giveaway.  Chickdowntown.com has offered up this Elizabeth & James t-shirt for one lucky Fashion Vice reader.

Deconstructed Tee
Elizabeth and James Deconstructed Tee

This line by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen has tons of downtown cool pieces, from tailored blazers to short shorts.  I love their feminine version of the plaid shirt.  I bought one last fall and it’s still one of my favorites. So I’m sure their t-shirts are just as wearable and comfortable.  What I really like about this t-shirt is the relaxed shape and how a few fantastic accessories – from bracelets to flat sandals – can come together to make the perfect weekend outfit.

So here’s how to enter: email me with your ideas about how you’d wear this tee.  If you own Elizabeth and James clothing or you are a fan, let me know what you think about the line.  Contest runs until July 5, afterward a winner - from the US only - will be chosen at random. Fashion Vice is only responsible for running the contest and nothing else.

If you like what you see, you can check out other Elizabeth & James items at chickdowntown.com.  It’s also a great place for women's dresses.  Show your love by checking out chickdowntown.com on Twitter and chickdowntown.com on Facebook Fan page.  Thank you chickdowntown.com and don’t for get to enter now!

Once Again Cardigan
June 24 | Favorite Things

The humble but now ubiquitous cardigan is the subject of the latest “On the Street” with Bill Cunningham on the New York Times website.  I love his street style reports, from his smart commentary to his perfectly articulated accent that brings to mind movies starring Katharine Hepburn.

I definitely cannot survive without few good cardigans.  My devotion to cardigans started when I was a freshman in high school when I’d borrow my dad’s wine colored cardigan to wear to school.  The cardigan itself was a bit Mr. Rogers, but I’d make it my own by wearing it with black tights or leggings under black wool shorts or a plaid Catholic school skirt I shredded.  Yes, I was definitely a child of 80’s.

Now I keep an array of cardigans, my current favorite look being the long, lightweight variety.  It’s the perfect thing to throw on for an extra layer.  As Bill Cunningham points out, cardigans come at every price point to make it a wardrobe staple anyone can afford.  Sure they aren’t the most exciting thing you can buy, but I always feel like I’m getting something that lasts a few seasons when I buy a cardigan.  You can also have fun with it, unlike buying black pants or a white button-up shirt.  Sure, there are different silhouettes to pants or details to a white shirt, but it doesn’t exactly make you feel excited about wearing it out.

So you don’t have to be Coco Chanel to put your own distinct spin on the cardigan.  And you can certainly enjoy the highs and lows of each price range.

Found: The Perfect Oxfords
June 23 | Shoes, Glorious Shoes

My detective work paid off!  I found these shoes online and when they arrived, they were exactly what I wanted.

Anthropologie
Sam Edelman Simona Oxford

Mine are actually black (I got lazy and didn’t take my own picture but the picture of the brown ones is from Urban Outfitters).  I do have to say that these run a bit big so they aren’t exactly perfect, but I don’t care because I found them on sale at Bluefly and they were the only ones left.  Apparently these have sold fast.  The leather is surprisingly soft and I like the slightly pointed heel.  There’s something about a round heel oxford that brings to mind comfort shoes.  I’m still debating whether to add laces, but I suppose I’ll first wear these out as they are to figure that part out.

This is the first time I’ve bought Sam Edelman shoes.  I’m definitely going to pay attention to this brand because these oxfords are very nice for the price.  I think I paid around 84 bucks plus shipping.  Not bad.

In Her Shoes
June 2 | Huh?

I got the latest anthropologie catalogue today.  Some of the looks are quite inspiring but here’s a look that really caught my eye.

Anthropologie

I’d drop that pastel cardigan for a solid cropped version but I really like the jumper.  But the bad news is the shoes are not for sale at anthropologie.  I’ve been looking for the perfect pair of oxfords for ages so it’s a bit disappointing that I have no idea where to find these particular pair of shoes.  Seems like I have some detective work to do.

Deep into Purple
June 1 | Favorite Things

I don’t visit the Piperlime website often.  I don’t know why, but maybe it’s because many of the brands didn’t interest me all that much.  But then I realized it has a great selection of on-trend shoes at sensible prices.  It’s perfect for trying the season’s latest looks without spending too much.  I should also check out the site more often because I didn’t realize they carry a nice selection of Marc by Marc Jacobs bags.  This one is definitely a winner.

I like the roomy dimensions but fairly flat profile to wear cross body – the shoulder starp is removable.  The gorgeous purple color is perfection.  I have a Marc by Marc Jacobs Softy bag from two years ago that has squishiest – and yes, softest - leather.  If this bag feels anything like that then I’m completely sold.  Now if only it would go on sale!

Spring into Sales
May  20 | Favorite Things

If you’re into a good sale – and who isn’t - now is the time to get moving.  Some of the best sales are happening right now, from Barneys Private Sale to Nordstrom’s Half-Yearly Sale.  I scored a cute DVF top I’ve been eyeing all spring over at net-a-porter and I was bummed to have to pass up some other items because I need to shop wisely.  So it helps to buy things with staying power.  Like this easy, breezy skirt…

This would go with any number of tanks or tees and a great flat sandal. Or even a chunky heel.  Or wedges!  Inhabit is also having a spring sample sale right now, and it’s definitely worth checking out this incredibly cool collection.  I’ve noticed that they’ve added more product photos to the site so that’s a huge when you can’t check out the goods in person.

A Shoulder To Hang On
May 12 | Favorite Things

I have this tan leather shoulder bag that I’ve been wearing everywhere lately because it works cross body and that’s become very important while I’m out with my squirmy toddler.  It helps that I can have both hands free to grab him before he runs and to reach my keys in a hurry.  But my bag was well loved before I put it back in action (it was also my travel purse and it’s been everywhere from Morocco to Nicaragua) and now it’s getting downright dingy.  I don’t like to use a handbag until it’s hanging by a thread.  I prefer to rotate bags and keep them in good shape for as long as possible.  So it’s definitely time to add another shoulder bag into the mix.

A.P.C. Linen and Leather Shoulder Bag

This bag is a true classic.  The linen and leather make it perfect for warm weather.  The adjustable strap is very handy too.  It also looks plenty big to fit everything from my bulky sunglasses case and little makeup bag to random toys and snacks to keep the kid fed and entertained on an outing.

Denim Mania
May 5 | Huh?

It pains me to admit this – since I have a million things I should be doing with my free time – but I’m addicted to ebay.  Not really for buying, but lately it is my go-to place to look for designer vintage clothing or pictures of handbags that I’m interested in.

So I happened to check out the auctions Elle magazine and Barneys put together, called Project Blue.  Several designers reconnoitered donated denim to create one-of-a-kind pieces to raise money for the charity Oceana.  It reminds me of that Project Runway challenge from season four where the designers grabbed tons of Levi’s jeans and jackets from a warehouse and had to make something new.  On the show, some of the outfits were fierce (channeling Christian Siriano here) and some were not so much.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to say the same about the Barneys/Elle denim recreations.  I’m not going to nitpick at the individual designs because everyone’s taste is different.  And I don’t have an hour to talk about which outfits look “home sewn” (now channeling Heidi Klum).  But I will mention my favorite.

J Crew Pietra
Project Blue Barneys/Elle Bottega Veneta Dress

Okay, I lied.  I will mention the one outfit that looks the most, um, home-sewn craft project gone completely off the deep end of Joanne’s fabric store… the Rodarte dress.  It looked fine, if a bit unfinished, in Elle magazine’s May issue.  But online it looks even worse.  It's kind of a mess, and not a hot one.s

While I’m at it, I have to ask one thing.  If you are auctioning clothes to raise money for a charity, shouldn't you have garments in more than one size?  Everything is listed as size 2-4, except for that retro-in-a-bad-way Stella McCartney bomber jacket that’s listed as a S-M.  It seems like they are leaving out plenty of women who could bid on these pieces.  I know the money goes to a good cause but it’s still a much more enticing deal if at the end of the day, a gal can actually work it out in her brand new do-gooder designer outfit.  No one could make a dress in a size 6 or 8?

Also, why do they only have one picture of each piece?  That’s really lame.  Where are the detail shots and a view of the back?  Who buys something based on one picture?

I’m sure there will be great interest in the clothes and plenty of bids, which is a good thing considering where the money is going.  But in my opinion there might be an even greater interest if they included more photos and sizes.

I am in love with this Thakoon dress.

The color, the print, the design… L-O-V-E!  There’s a shirt dress version on eLuxury that’s on sale but even that one is cost prohibitive at over $800. I guess I’ll just admire online and look around for something inspired by it.  Feel free to pass along any suggestions my way!

Going for the Gold
April 29 | Shoes, Glorious Shoes

Last week when the weather was close to 80 degrees I heard the call of summer and bought a pair of white Earnest Sewn jeans – the Harlan style to be exact.  And wouldn’t you know it?  The temperature dropped 20 degrees the next day.  Son of a bitch.  Oh well.  Good weather will be back and I will wear my new jeans dammit.  These would go nicely with them.

There’s a black version but I like the gold ones better.  I am definitely feeling the love for sparkly shoes.

Feeling Blue
April 27 | Favorite Things

If there’s one thing that get’s the fashion addict in me a little weak in the knees, it’s a fabulous handbag.  One of my all time favorites is the Balenciaga City but here’s another bag that has my full attention.

Balenciaga Arena
Balenciaga Arena Classic Square Handbag

This is sure to be a collector’s favorite.  The color, Maldives, is absolutely gorgeous and the new tote shape is a welcome addition to the rest of the Balenciaga bag line.  When I was in New York a couple of months ago, I did the rounds at Barneys and the Balenciaga section was so damn tempting.  Everything was displayed out in the open so you can touch the leather and check out the weight of each bag.  Tactile handbag heaven!

Back to Basics
April 21 | Collections Agent
It was downright hot today… at least it was for me after it took forever to herd my toddler back to our car after a running errands and rewarding him with frozen yogurt.  The healthy fro yo didn’t go over as well as ice cream – that little stinker has very discerning tastes already – but the pebbles under all the trees we passed while getting to the parking lot were a big hit.  He had to linger at every tree.  Meanwhile, I was getting a bit sweaty and wishing I had on a t-shirt.

I'm actually in desperate need of warm weather clothes. Luckily, one of my favorite clothing lines, Inhabit, is having a sale on cotton apparel.  A sale is a great excuse to stock up on basics.  Inhabit makes the best clothes for throwing on without thinking twice about comfort or style.  I love a no brainer!

When I first saw that rompers were going to stick around for spring, I thought there’s no way would I ever wear one of those things.  I’d wear that chic Dries Van Noten jumpsuit but I draw the line at rompers!  Okay, I admit now I’m shifting course a bit.  I’d wear this.

Not only would this work for a morning at the park with my toddler, it would work for lots of other favorite activities: coffee and a good book at my favorite café (happens so rarely these days), a leisurely day of shopping (also a rare occurence lately), casual date with the husband.  I’m going to ignore for a moment that you have to peel this thing off from the top to use the bathroom and focus on the cute cut of the sleeves and the beautiful blue linen fabric.  Because of the glorious sunny weather I can’t help but to look on the bright side.

It’s Out!
April 18 | Favorite Things

Bargain-loving style hunters rejoice!  TheOutnet.com, the hotly anticipated offshoot of net-a-porter, is finally here.  If you aren’t like Elle Woods and don’t mind wearing last season’s Prada shoes… or Derek Lam dress or Marc Jacobs top… then theoutnet.com is the place for you.  Discounts are pretty deep, some items going for 80% off.  But sizes are limited and I would guess quantity is limited too.  But regardless, it’s fun to look through the merchandise.  Here are my faves:

Hazelle Dress
Anna Sui Strapless Dress
Hazelle Dress
Chloe Platform Sandals
Hazelle Dress
Matthew Williamson Tote

What’s interesting is these products are obviously things left over from net-a-porter.com seasonal sales.  I wonder how this site will affect how the site does sales in the future.  I also wonder how I’m going to keep myself from checking out this all the time.  It’s already bookmarked... this is where self-control needs to kick in.
